On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Presentation provides some key insights on the current internet of things (IoT) adoption rates, the key motivations, challenges, allocated budgets, digital transformation initiatives, security needs, and a general view of the key IoT players in Asia/Pacific (AP).

There has been an increasing amount of importance assigned to improving the shop-floor operational efficiency, primarily to improve quality and reduce asset downtimes. The insights gathered through data collected from the source are paramount in driving the overall manufacturing strategies. The data collection can be from the shop-floor assets or from remote field equipment that could provide valuable customer usage and device performance metrics. Factory of the future or smart manufacturing is one such setup that aids in integrating the IT and operational technology (OT) systems to generate a holistic view of the overall business and value chain–related risks and options to mitigate them.

IoT as a technology forms the platform that drives the rest of the associated manufacturing applications in a typical smart manufacturing environment so much so that manufacturing organizations have been looking at prioritizing investments for deploying the rest of the supporting IoT infrastructure.

"Profit erosion driven by increasing competition and lower operational efficiencies will be the key factor in adopting IoT-related technologies. Additionally, IoT as a technology will play a very important role in ensuring that the various functional silos are seamlessly integrated, thereby increasing transparency and visibility," says Sampath Kumar Venkataswamy, research manager, IDC Manufacturing Insights, Asia/Pacific.
