On-line Presentation

This IDC Survey looks at the technology investment priorities that utilities across Asia/Pacific have. In most countries in Asia characterised by government ownership, regulation, and integrated operators across the value chain, the level of technology maturity in relation to cloud, mobility, analytics, and internet of things (IoT) is just developing. These technology capabilities are critical for utilities to be in a position to manage their operations at lower cost and to deliver more effectively to the developing requirements of customers. This report shares the results from IDC's 2018 Asia/Pacific Energy Survey for utilities organisations.

"Buying preferences in Asia are heavily driven by the ownership of the sector. Most utilities in Asia are government-owned and vertically integrated, and a few are among the most competitive in the world (e.g., those in Australia, Hong Kong, and Singapore," says Emilie Ditton, associate VP, IDC Energy Insights Asia/Pacific. "With that in mind, most utilities organisations in Asia are just in the early stages of building out their digital operations. Only 6% of utilities companies in Asia identify with being digitally disruptive, but 34% have recognised that a digital strategy is a requirement. Technology priorities across cloud, mobility, and IoT demonstrate a focus on creating the foundational platform that utilities organisations will need to operate a digital business and consume the vast data sets across customers, smart metres, distributed assets, and the network that are the core of managing a modern utility operation effectively," she adds.
