IDC expects 5G services to be available from early 2019 in many markets, with broad availability coming in 2021–2023. 5G will neither solve all communications problems nor be applicable to all business problems. However, 5G networks will be more capable, reliable, and scalable than the radio networks before them.
"Advances in other radio network forms, such as satellite and WiFi, will also participate in the cutting of many wires between things, opening opportunities for a vast array of use cases. The opportunity here is to connect a wide array of things, all the time. Whether that connection is smart, scalable, secure, and sustainable is up to the user," says Nikhil Batra, senior research manager, IDC Asia/Pacific Telecom Practice.
