On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation explores both the impact of regional trends and the demographics of the manufacturing workforce in the Asia/Pacific (AP) region. Manufacturers experience stress because of existing skills deficits and the future availability of personnel caused by the marketplace's increased competition and the pressure from digital transformation (DX). Many strategies are employed to address workforce skills and resource shortages to increase attraction and retention of talent. There is also extensive use of big data, analytics, mobile devices, and Internet of Things (IoT) to bridge the gap caused by existing talent shortages and the customers' increased production demand requirements. In addition, increased collaboration between IT and line of business (LOB) will see further adoption of cognitive/artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), and robotic process automation (RPA) in the near future to address the talent deficit.

"The skills that manufacturers require are changing," says Stephanie Krishnan, research director, IDC Asia/Pacific, Manufacturing Insights. "As manufacturers in Asia drive for productivity, quality, and innovation, some jobs will be replaced permanently, but the requirements for digital and soft skill competencies will also rise. Manufacturing and industrial organizations need to start hiring and organically developing these future competencies now to curtail the current talent shortfall," she adds.
