Market Analysis Perspective: Status of 5G Networks in Asia/Pacific
By: Bill Rojas Adjunct Research Director, IDC Asia/Pacific, Hugh Ujhazy Vice President, IoT and Telecommunications
Abstract
South Korea and Australia are the early adopters of 5G technology and services in the Asia/Pacific region. IDC expects Hong Kong, Taiwan, the People's Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, and Southeast Asian countries to roll out 5G services between 2020 and 2023. In this study, we take a closer look at the status of 5G's spectrum allocation, initial deployments, and planned deployments for 2020. To realize 5G rollouts, a number of new technologies will be introduced into the communication service providers (CSP) core networks, such as network function virtualization, cloud–radio access network (cloud-RAN) and disaggregation, high-bandwidth fronthaul optics, software-defined optical transport, and orchestration and containerization. One of the toughest challenges for CSPs will be the migration of 4G packet core to 5G packet core and the simultaneous support of 4G and 5G New Radio. 5G incremental capex, which includes all elements of the network that need to be upgraded or enhanced to support 5G services, will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39% between 2020 and 2023.
