Abstract

Digital transformation (DX) in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), which are organisations with less than 500 employees, has been a challenge in previous years. However, by 2019, SMBs started following large enterprise peers on the DX journey, driven by the need to maintain competitiveness in the digital economy, clearer vision on what DX offers in terms of business value, and accessibility to technologies. However, although SMBs understand the need for DX, most SMBs are still in the "status quo" mode, asking questions such as "Why should we change?" and "What do we need to do?"

The objective of IDC's 2019 Asia/Pacific Future SMB Survey was to identify key business and technology priorities, challenges, and preferences of SMBs in the region. The survey also shows how SMBs in the region have been impacted by DX as well as how mature they are when it comes to embracing and adopting digital technologies that will then help them to evolve into Future SMBs.

This survey will examine the key business and technology concerns of 455 Australia and New Zealand SMB organisations, including:

  • Top business priorities and challenges to achieving DX maturity
  • Technology investments areas for 2020, payment model preferences, and vendor selection criteria
  • An overview of the Future SMB, the gold standard that SMBs in the ANZ region must follow to be successful in the digital economy, including how SMBs in the region believe they will fare by the end of 2020 in the five masteries of the Future SMB state: agile culture, agile capital, agile processes, agile experiences, and agile partnerships.
