Installment-based microfinancing schemes have become widely available in the emerging markets in Asia countries, where consumer incomes are low and telco subsidies are almost non-existent or have low traction. Such schemes led to the expansion of smartphones in price ranges that were previously deemed too expensive for a large number of users in these countries. The rise of smartphone usage in these mobile-first economies, alongside the availability of smartphones with good-enough specs at price points that are just within the reach of these consumers willing to pay with monthly installment plans, has led to the strong acceptance of these financing schemes. Various established and multiple new fintech players have entered this space to collaborate with smartphone OEMs and channel partners to make these financing schemes more universally available and contribute to the growth of the smartphone market in the region.
