This IDC Perspective analyzes the approach of European governments as users — not policymakers — of artificial intelligence/machine learning in terms of the ethical use of data and technology. The ethical usage of AI/ML emerged as a key challenge for both the public and private sectors in 2019. European policymakers have taken an active role in creating guidelines at national and pan-European levels to prompt the usage of AI/ML in an ethical manner to reduce the risks of discrimination and lack of transparency as well as increase data protection.
"European governments need to take an active role as users of AI/ML. Government has a major impact on the AI/ML market because of the size of government technology procurement and the sensitive nature of many government domains," said Massimiliano Claps, research director, IDC Government Insights.
