This Market Perspective takes a closer look at the European customer base of SAP — the worldwide ERP market leader — based on a survey from March 2020. IDC queried 400 European SAP ERP customers regarding the state of their SAP ERP deployment, plans with respect to upgrading to S/4HANA, decision-making processes related to upgrading, and other issues. The study discusses the implications of the current sentiment and provides actionable guidance to SAP and the wider ERP community.
"SAP is working hard to bring its huge ERP installed base onto its new S/4HANA platform. It has applied some urgency through the end-of-life announcement for SAP ERP in 2027, but IDC's survey shows that a significant proportion of the customer base are unconvinced. Concerns persist about associated costs and risks of a migration, as well as the lack of a clear business case. There are several indications that SAP has more work to do in terms of improving the business case for migration." — Program Manager Edyta Kosowska, European Enterprise Applications, IDC
