Business Strategy: Itron Utility Week Highlights Big Data in Utilities

This IDC Energy Insights report delves into how CenterPoint Energy ended up delivering an Outage Situational Awareness (OSA) system. Stuart Ingram, manager of Data Systems at CenterPoint Energy, had a great presentation about outage systems at CenterPoint. The addition of 2.5 million smart meters translates to almost 250 million records a day for just meter information that needs to be monitored by an OMS.

By investing in upgrading both the data architecture and the OMS, CenterPoint has laid the foundation to improve its capabilities in several key areas:

  • Faster detection of outages and localizing them
  • Improved information flow to customers through traditional means as well as through mobile and social media channels
  • Rapid decision making at the operations centers to limit outages
  • Faster dispatch of crews that leads to short outage times

According to Kevin Prouty, research VP, IDC Energy Insights, "The lesson is to develop a data strategy as a foundation and then apply analytics and data applications on top of that digital foundation."
