U.S. SMB Cloud Applications and Platform Preferences: 2018 Update

By: Raymond Boggs

On-line Presentation

This IDC Survey provides a detailed look at the use of cloud resources by U.S. small businesses (SBs with <5, 5–9, 10–19, 20–49, and 50–99 employees) and midsize firms (MBs with 100–249, 250–499, and 500–999 employees). After presenting the percentage of firms by size using any cloud resources, the share of IT spending represented by cloud is examined and compared with the share of IT spending represented by hardware, traditional software, and services for SBs, SBs with 50–99 employees, MBs, and large businesses (LBs with 1,000–4,999 employees). The mean numbers of small and medium-sized business (SMB) cloud applications used in 2014 and 2018 are compared across company size categories.

Current software application use is then examined in greater detail for SBs, SBs with 50–99 employees, and MBs. The share of firms using each of 13 applications, whether via cloud or on-premises, is examined along with the mean number of applications used. The use of 25 different cloud applications is compared and the SB and MB share of application users that are running cloud-based solutions is then provided for different software categories: accounting, tax preparation, Microsoft Office Suite, other personal productivity suites, CRM, database/database management, data backup and archiving, web hosting/web serving, email, credit card processing, invoicing, payroll, and storage management.

The top 12 software applications planned for acquisition in the next 12 months, independent of deployment type, are then presented for SBs, SBs with 50–99 employees, and MBs. The preference for on-premises versus cloud for future applications is examined for SBs, SBs with 50–99 employees, and MBs, with additional information provided for very small businesses (VSBs with <5 employees). The survey concludes with detail on SMB use of different cloud platforms: Amazon Web Services, CenturyLink-Savvis, CSC Communications, Dimension Data, Google Cloud Platform, IBM-SoftLayer, Ingram Micro Cloud (Odin), Microsoft Azure, NaviSite, Rackspace, Verizon Terremark, VMware, and Workday Cloud Platform, as well as managed service providers and telco/online service providers.
