IDC PeerScape: Practices for Fostering IT Innovation with Informal Approaches

By: Maryfran Johnson

Abstract

This IDC study introduces practices for encouraging and sustaining innovation within the IT organization by using more fluid, informal approaches to actively promote innovative mindsets and reward experimental approaches to solving business problems. This study provides new solutions for IT leaders whose company culture or organizational structure would not support the creation of a more formal, separate innovation group within IT. By implementing these practices, IT organizations will enhance their reputations as creative thinkers and collaborative business partners. While innovation, leadership, and business strategy are all top-of-mind concerns for CIOs and IT leaders, the creation of an innovative, forward-thinking IT group has the greatest potential to accelerate overall business success.

"More than ever, business leaders today need innovative, future-focused technology leadership," says Maryfran Johnson, adjunct analyst with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "As the informal approaches described in this study show, successful innovation 'ecosystems' can be built and sustained within existing IT groups without separate organizational structures or management complexity."
