Executive Guide to Assessing Tangible and Intangible Impacts of Cognitive Computing and Artificial Intelligence

By: Marc StrohleinAdjunct Research Advisor, David SchubmehlResearch Director, Cognitive/Artificial Intelligence Systems

Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses the important role that CIOs and other senior IT executives have in helping business leaders and line-of-business executives understand and weigh the consequences of leveraging cognitive/artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This study underscores the role that senior IT leaders can and should play in helping their businesses "look before they leap." It explains why assessing impacts is becoming urgent, identifies some key technologies and applications in the enterprise, and provides examples of cognitive/AI impacts in the enterprise. In conclusion, it offers suggestions for protecting business interests by developing avoidance and mitigation strategies.

"The lightning rod for concerns about cognitive/AI has been the potential for loss of jobs to robots and intelligent machines," says Marc Strohlein, adjunct research advisor with IDC's Research Network. "Yet, at the business level, cognitive/artificial intelligence technologies also have profound implications for privacy, security, decision making, and even physiological and psychological well-being — any of which can materially affect the reputation and health of an enterprise."
