IDC Market Glance: Retail Future Store, 3Q19

By: Leslie HandVice President, IDC Retail Insights

On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Market Glance on the retail future store presents a high-level view of the participants in each of the digitally transformed technology categories presented. The digital transformation (DX) of retail has redefined business processes and technology requirements. Outcome-driven innovation for the customer is driving retail technology investments — directly, indirectly, and collaboratively. Each retail subsegment has a list of technology providers in some categories that specifically excel at serving their needs. New (or evolved) categories include automated self-checkout, video analytics, and advanced payments. The retailer appetite for technology that facilitates continued innovation has come into sharp focus, and as a result, platforms, cloud-based capabilities, rich partner ecosystems/API-enabled offerings, and full-service providers are in high demand.

Leslie Hand, vice president, IDC Retail Insights, states, "Retailers are fully awake to the opportunity to transform the store into a multifaceted digital-physical service hub, tailored to each location and the locations' consumer's needs. The shopper journey will sometimes be fully automated and, at other times, partially automated. The retail employee experience will be digital, well informed, and timely, with AI-driven automation delivering value in every way possible."
