This IDC study discusses the file encryption and full disk encryption products for the worldwide endpoint encryption market. The endpoint security market, which consists of file encryption and full disk encryption products, reached $608.6 million in 2017, a 3.2% year-over-year increase, driven mainly by spending on additional file encryption software. Market growth for file encryption products increased nearly 6% from 2016 to 2017, but that healthy growth is being offset by a modest 1% year-over-year increase in third-party full disk encryption software. Microsoft is a significant influencer there having made its BitLocker full disk encryption feature in Windows increasingly easy to deploy and manage.
"Established endpoint encryption vendors are evaluating pure-play providers of information rights management solutions, data discovery, and classification software because enterprises are increasingly seeking ways to secure collaboration and track data shared with business partners and other external entities. The embedded encryption functions are generally easier to use and manage," said Robert Westervelt, research director of IDC's Data Security practice.
