This IDC Market Perspective discusses the future of governance, trust, and shareholder value for digital service platforms. Digital service platforms have an opportunity today to establish a credible, a common, and an open framework for trusted conduct that would offer assurance to end users and legislative and regulatory bodies alike about the integrity of platforms' operating models.

"It's usually better to act than get acted on," said John Jackson, VP of Consumer Research, IDC, "and while we don't see massive user defection from social, messaging, and other platforms nor do we see imminently disruptive legislation against them, this is one of those times."

Jackson argues that today's scrutiny creates persistent overhang that will weigh on platforms' business performance over time. "Digital service providers can get ahead of this now," he continued, "by creating a foundation for future economic value creation via assurance to governments, partners, and customers, which we believe will be particularly important as platforms seek to expand services and diversify into adjacent or noncore markets."
