This IDC Market Analysis Perspective (MAP) looks at the current state of the worldwide wearables market, who the major players are, how technology buyers should consider wearables for business, and where the market is heading and finally provides advice for technology suppliers.
"The worldwide wearables market is in a state of transition," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director for IDC's Wearables Team. "Vendors are moving past their first-generation devices, which have provided a limited, yet useful, set of helpful experiences. The next generation of devices will prove much more robust, with ecosystems of applications and partners, a collection of sensors and connectivity options, and styles and prices to meet the needs of consumers and commercial users."
"As the wearables market grows, so do the opportunities," continues Llamas. "Health will receive renewed focus, especially now that Apple's Watch Series 4 has been approved by the FDA. This opens the door for other vendors to do likewise and for suppliers to provide best-in-class hardware and software to make digital health a reality. Likewise, numerous companies have launched vertical-specific applications enabling wearable workflows and communication. These will help drive wearables' presence where it has long been absent: in the enterprise."
