Mitsubishi Electric Collaborates with Oracle to Extend Industrial Robotic Arms to the Cloud

By: Jing Bing ZhangResearch Director, IDC Worldwide Robotics

Abstract

This was the first time where the two demonstrated cloud-robot integration that allows the control from the cloud to be directly extended to the robot's actions. The on-site integrated systems also demonstrated the collection and communication of real-time robot data to Oracle IoT Production Monitoring Cloud for further analysis to drive production performance management and efficiency enhancement.

This IDC Perspective discusses the Mitsubishi Electric and Oracle's Edgecross collaboration that extends the industrial robotic arms to the cloud for collecting and integrating robot data to cloud-based enterprise business applications.

Hannover Messe 2019 was the first time where Oracle and Mitsubishi Electric demonstrated cloud-robot integration that allows the control from the cloud to be directly extended to the robot's actions. The on-site integrated systems also demonstrated the collection and communication of real-time robot data to Oracle IoT Production Monitoring Cloud for further analysis to drive production performance management and efficiency enhancement.

"Clearly the collaboration and the live demonstration represents a combination of Oracle's strengths in IT and Mitsubishi Electric's strengths in OT," said Dr. Jing Bing Zhang, research director, Worldwide Robotics and Asia/Pacific Manufacturing Insights, IDC Asia/Pacific. "It provides manufacturers who utilize factory automation products such as Mitsubishi Electric’s robots and edge controls, etc. with many new opportunities to achieve closer and seamless IT/OT integration and to maximize the resultant benefits of real-time operation visibility, optimized performance, improved productivity, and reduced total cost of ownership," added Zhang.
