This IDC study provides a forecast by revenue and capacity for the worldwide SDS market. The forecast data focuses on end-user consumption of four categories of SDS solutions — block, file, object, and HCI — that cover cumulative shipments of solutions sold to customers by storage system suppliers and independent software vendors (ISVs). The HCI subsegment includes a combination of block-, file-, and object-based storage platforms, depending on vendor implementation. For each of these categories, IDC has estimated value (end-user spend) as well as capacity shipped.
"The strong growth in next-generation workloads like big data and analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the internet of things will help drive strong revenue growth in the software-defined storage market, particularly in the hyperconverged infrastructure segment," said Eric Burgener, research vice president, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies. "At the same time, the influx of new storage technologies like NVMe, NVMe over Fabric, and storage-class memory will help broaden the scope of legacy workloads that software-defined storage will be able to handle at scale, resulting in very strong revenue growth for the sector as a whole over the forecast period."
