2018 Worldwide SMB Sources Used to Learn About Advanced Technology: Growing Use of Social Media

Abstract

This IDC Survey presentation provides information on the U.S. small business (SB) (fewer than 100 employees) and midsize firm (100–999 employees) use of different sources of information to learn about advanced technology. The average number of information sources used is compared for SBs and MBs. Traditional word of mouth, vendor websites, third-party advisors, and technology publications are examined for SBs and MBs, with additional detail provided on the growing use of social media — specifically Facebook, LinkedIn, Yelp, Twitter, blogs/wikis, user reviews on ecommerce sites like Amazon.com, and other online social networking sources/communities. The mean numbers of social media sites use by SBs and MBs that use any social media sites are compared. The share of firms using any online information sources are also compared. Social media use is tracked across the eight SMB company size categories: <5, 5–9, 10–19, 20–49, 50–99, 100–249, 250–499, and 500–999 employees. Detail on specific social media resources is provided for SBs and MBs as well as firms with <5, 50–99, and 100–249 employees.

Information is also presented for SBs (10–99 employees) and MBs (100–999 employees) in six additional countries: the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, India, China, and Brazil. Use of different information sources used by firms in developed and developing countries is compared along with the average number of information sources used. Social media use is also examined by country, both in general and by different social media sites. The mean number of social media sites used is also presented by country for both SBs and MBs.
