This IDC Market Perspective examines the demographics behind key consumer groups that are likely to see a meaningful impact on their connectivity use experience and drive early 5G adoption in the U.S. market. Early 5G commercial launches in South Korea, China, and the United States are largely positioned as consumer-facing services. And while the first iterations of 5G provide massive improvements in bandwidth, those increased speeds may not be readily apparent to most consumers, given their smartphone usage patterns.
"While the most innovative uses for 5G will emerge in the enterprise space, there is no ignoring the size and scope of the consumer market," says Jason Leigh, research manager, Mobility at IDC. "But to capture momentum in the consumer space, mobile network operators need to understand 5G's impacts on individual customer subsegments and develop innovative 5G-specific applications and craft compelling value propositions that appeal to and help justify the expense of 5G upgrades."
