On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Survey summarizes findings from IDC's 3Q19 U.S. Gamer Survey as it relates to the likely video game console hardware sales in the United States (and North America) during the 2019 holiday shopping season. The demographics of likely buyers are considered, as are gaming-related buying factors, hardware-related rationales, and brand perception concerns across the major console SKUs from Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony.

"U.S. console bundle sales are on track to be lower in 4Q19 than they were in the last quarter of 2018, largely because we're in a console transition or trough year for Microsoft and Sony. This means Nintendo's Switch and Switch Lite systems are poised to come out on top in sales by a wide margin, and the survey results further suggest that prospective Switch buyers are especially concerned about and interested in the games lineup, so Nintendo can further its own cause by hammering away on gaming-related factors in its marketing efforts." — Lewis Ward, research director, IDC's Gaming and VR/AR
