This IDC study forecasts home video game console hardware and software and related services through 2023. North America is broken out from Western Europe, Asia/Pacific, and a combined the rest of the world region. Seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-generation consoles are contrasted in aggregate, and packaged game discs are considered separately from digital game distribution channels and OEM subscription services. Digital-only microconsoles are considered in much less detail.
"While Nintendo's Switch has been the main growth story of the past two years, 2020 will mark another turning point in console gaming with the debut of Sony's PS5 and Microsoft's new Xbox consoles. We expect both these systems to offer compelling purchasing rationales to an increasing range of gamers around the globe, and we anticipate that total console game revenue will rise by an average of 5% a year through 2023." — Lewis Ward, IDC's research director of Gaming and AR/VR
