Worldwide Smartphone Market Shares, 2018: Revenues Climb While Shipments Decline

By: Anthony ScarsellaResearch Manager, Mobile Phones, William StofegaProgram Director, Mobile Device Technology and Trends

Abstract

This IDC study provides an analysis of vendor performance in the worldwide smartphone market in 2018.

"2018 represented a difficult year for the smartphone market as consumers continued to hold on to their current 'good enough' devices longer than expected," says Anthony Scarsella, research manager for IDC's Mobile Phones team. "Despite the negative shipment growth, we still have total market revenue climbing from last year, thanks to the abundance of premium devices that have found success in the market. This pricing trend does not look like it's slowing down any time soon as the arrival of 5G devices and expensive foldable devices set to launch later this year will drive total market ASPs up once again."
