Worldwide and U.S. Enterprise Storage Systems Forecast, 2019–2023

By: Sebastian Lagana, Natalya YezhkovaResearch Vice President, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group

Abstract

This IDC study provides historical data (2014–2018) and a forecast data (2019–2023) for the worldwide and U.S. enterprise storage systems markets. The forecast and historical data focuses on end-user consumption of three categories of enterprise storage systems — external OEM, internal OEM, and "other," which covers cumulative shipments of systems sold directly to customers by original design manufacturers. For each of these categories, IDC has estimated value (end-user spending), terabytes, and price per gigabyte.

"2018 marked a significant acceleration of spending on infrastructure in support of a digital, data-driven economy, resulting in extremely strong performance in the storage systems market," says Sebastian Lagana, research manager, Infrastructure Platforms and Technologies. "While it is reasonable to expect a pullback in the pace of spending in coming years, significant opportunity exists in the storage market for vendors able to capture pockets of demand related to all-flash, hyperconverged infrastructure, software-defined storage, and hybrid multicloud."
