The OT Perspective on IT/OT Convergence: Relevant Findings for IT

By: Remy GlaisnerResearch Director, IT/OT Convergence Strategies

Abstract

This IDC Perspective reflects two important observations through the lens of IDC's IT/OT Convergence Strategies program. Through the beginning of the second quarter, IDC Insights has had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with a variety of manufacturing operations technology (OT) leaders as well as leading supply chain professionals. Many briefings with significant technology vendors proposing either OT, information technology (IT), or a combination of both classes of technologies have also added to our vision regarding IT/OT convergence applied across the board and often in relation with enterprise digital transformation (DX).

"Within the manufacturing and warehousing environments, operations leaders are positioning as the enterprise champion enabling the digital transformation. They do not take such position at the expense of IT though: they navigate the virtual realms with ease through tools such as digital twins and do not entirely see this role as a function of IT," said Remy Glaisner, research director for IT/OT Convergence Strategies. "However, aspirations seem limited, because technology providers are generally failing at building clear bridges that would fully speak to both IT and operations leadership."
