On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Survey summarizes findings from IDC's 3Q19 U.S. Gamer Survey as it relates to smartphone, tablet, and handheld game console use, spending patterns, user demographics, genre preferences, and more. The deck provides an in-depth view into mobile gaming dynamics in the United States in 3Q19 based on iOS device (App Store), Android device (with Google Play), Fire OS tablet (with Appstore), and Nintendo 3DS/2DS device and user segmentation. Two gamer types, hardcore and casual gamers, are also addressed in depth regardless of mobile/handheld device used. The total mobile/handheld gamer sample was almost 3,700.

Some of the metrics assessed across these six device/OS groups and gamer types are device/OS market shares; gamer age, gender, ethnicity, and income level; hours of typical weekly gameplay; top 5 genres played; eSports- and gameplay-related video viewing activity; game spending penetration rates and ARPU; gameplay mode preferences; attitude toward four in-game ad formats; and new mobile/handheld gaming device purchase intent in 4Q19.

"There continued to be an interesting dynamic in the mobile gaming space between casual and hardcore gamers in 3Q19. It's not the case that hardcore gamers don't play casual-leaning genres; in fact, tile-matching and match three puzzle games such as Candy Crush Saga were hardcore gamers' second-favorite genre late last year, behind action and open world action games. The reality is that hardcore gamers put in a lot more time across a wide range of genres than casual gamers, although hardcore gamers certainly also gravitated toward fast-twitch competitive titles in particular." — Lewis Ward, IDC's research director of Gaming and VR/AR
