Unified Storage Deployments Driven Largely by Flexibility and Easier Data Sharing

By: Eric BurgenerResearch Vice President, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group

Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses customer perceptions and usage modes for unified storage. With the advent of new high-performance storage products based on NVMe such as persistent memory and storage-class memory and evolving storage functionality supporting higher availability and increasingly granular multitenant management capabilities, IDC wondered if it was time for customers (and vendors) to reevaluate how they plan to use unified storage. To explore this topic, IDC performed a primary research project in July 2019.

"Among enterprises using unified storage, dual-mode deployments where customers simultaneously run both block- and file-based workloads on the same system was much higher than expected," said Eric Burgener, research vice president, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies. "While unified storage is not right for all customers and workloads, we noted that 100% of survey respondents were satisfied with their unified storage deployments."
