Worldwide Smartphone Forecast Update, 2019–2023: September 2019

By: Anthony ScarsellaResearch Manager, Mobile Phones, William StofegaProgram Director, Mobile Device Technology and Trends

Abstract

This IDC study presents the updated five-year forecast for smartphone shipments worldwide by operating system. The worldwide smartphone market will reach a total of 1.37 billion units shipped in 2019, down 2.2% from the 1.40 billion units shipped in 2018. From there, shipments will reach 1.48 billion units in 2023, the final year of our forecast period, resulting in a CAGR of 1.1%.

"Although we are facing yet another year of decline in the smartphone market, the outer years of our forecast look positive, thanks to the arrival of more affordable 5G handsets and the growth of the midtier market," said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "Despite the third consecutive year of declining shipments, the growth rate of 5G has accelerated slightly due to new low-cost models that we expect to hit the market next year. ASPs for 5G handsets have come down since our last forecast, thanks to more affordable models expected to launch in China. While the ASP for 5G smartphones in 2020 will be around $1,000 in the United States, Latin America, and Japan, China will see ASPs closer to $600. Price points like this are sure to grab consumers attention once 5G handsets hit the market in full force."
