Worldwide Hard Disk Drive Forecast Update, 2019–2023

By: Edward BurnsResearch Director, Hard Disk Drive and Storage Technologies, John RydningResearch Vice President, Global Datasphere

Abstract

This IDC study presents an update to the Worldwide Hard Disk Drive Forecast, 2019–2023 (IDC #US45022919, May 2019). The worldwide HDD forecast update integrates IDC's current IT hardware and consumer electronics products forecasts through 2022 as well as updated HDD and solid state drive (SSD) technology transition assumptions. This forecast also reflects updated HDD and SSD attach rate assumptions in systems, particularly where the mass storage device is fungible in the system or device.

Underpinning the worldwide HDD forecast update are IDC's assumptions regarding HDD technology transitions that will affect the pace of HDD areal density growth (see Worldwide Hard Disk Drive Component Forecast, 2019-2023, IDC #US45586419, October 2019), HDD product transitions, and HDD price-per-gigabyte declines for each HDD product segment.

"SSD attach rates to new PCs are rising faster than previously expected, which is impacting future portable and desktop PC HDD unit demand and revenue negatively," according to Ed Burns, research director, Hard Disk Drive and Storage Technologies. "Overall HDD petabyte demand is still expected to grow over the forecast as end users continue to shift from distributed data storage on underutilized endpoints to storing data in centralized cloud service provider hyperscale datacenters that leverage high-capacity enterprise HDDs."
