The Benefits of Being a High-Velocity Software Organization

By: Larry CarvalhoResearch Director, Platform as a Service, Al GillenGroup Vice President, Software Development and Open Source, Joseph McKendrick

Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective focuses on the important practices that have been adopted by organizations that have demonstrated their ability to accelerate software delivery.

"The notion of 'high velocity' software organizations refers to companies that have successfully adopted an agile development and deployment process that has resulted in the ability to release code daily or more frequently, as needed," said Larry Carvalho, research director, Platform as a Service, IDC. "IDC found a meaningful portion of companies in the industry today have become high-velocity software organizations, and these organizations are typically 10–15 percentage points more likely to have successfully embraced the notion of a microservices design and have adopted the use of containers and the serverless approach. IDC's opinion is that high-velocity companies are well positioned to succeed in the future, while their less progressive peers are likely to face an increasingly disruptive competitive environment."
