Cloud-Streamed Gaming Market, Part 1: The Second Wave of Services Like Stadia and Project xCloud Makes Landfall

By: Lewis WardResearch Director, Gaming and VR/AR, Shane RauResearch Vice President, Computing Semiconductors

Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective is the first of two near-term documents on the emerging cloud-stream gaming (CSG) market. This document primarily focuses on the four major international CSG providers that are directly offering services today and will likely offer commercial CSG services by the end of 2020: Google, Stadia, Microsoft xCloud, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, and Sony PlayStation. The second document will focus on the infrastructure and technologies enabling these services.

"If past is prologue, then the market for cloud-stream gaming will be a long-term development," said Lewis Ward, research director, Gaming and VR/AR. "Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Sony are investing early in an attempt to catch a probable wave of rapid market growth as the cost of delivering cloud-streamed gaming comes down, aligning with the broader strategic goals of these companies, and as more mobile gamers on 5G networks in particular discover they can play excellent new games at an affordable price. That will not happen in 2020. Next year will mostly be about nailing down the basic components of successful CSG services."
