Artificial Intelligence in Mining: It Has Begun

By: Benjamin KirkwoodSenior Research Manager, Emilie DittonAVP, Energy Insights and Manufacturing Insights

Abstract

This IDC Perspective provides an overview of artificial intelligence (AI) in the current mining landscape. It investigates a number of organisations currently developing AI-enabled equipment and software, some of which are being adopted by mining companies around the world.

"Individual mines are often heavily siloed, with each department only thinking and caring about its own priorities. This mindset will carry over as we enter the digital twin era. To ensure a site acquires a useful product in which all components seamlessly integrate with one another, a clear organisationwide strategy needs to be developed and maintained throughout the design, implementation, and operation processes," says Ben Kirkwood, senior research manager, IDC Worldwide Mining Insights.
