IDC's Worldwide Multicloud Data Management and Protection Taxonomy, 2020

By: Phil GoodwinResearch Director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group, Andrew SmithResearch Manager, Cloud Infrastructure Services

Abstract

This IDC study provides details of IDC's worldwide multicloud data management and protection taxonomy. The data protection market is highly dynamic, driven by new application workload deployments and cloud capabilities. The majority of IT organizations use a combination of on-premises hardware and software and cloud-based services in their data protection strategies. This taxonomy is intended to capture the data protection "universe" of IT spend and set the foundation for research into emerging market requirements.

"Data protection is rapidly evolving and becoming much more integrated into the overall storage software stack," said Phil Goodwin, research director, IDC's Storage Systems and Software. "Backup software and data replication software are part of a continuum of data protection methods and are therefore logically combined. Containers, microservices, and DataOps will change the way that data protection vendors must architect products to meet the needs of multicloud workloads."
