Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective discusses the outbreak of COVID-19 and its impact on the device industry as of February 19, 2020. Even in the most optimistic of recoveries, the massive disruption that COVID-19 has already caused to supply chains and business operations will permanently alter how companies operate when the dust settles. Regional diversification will become a must to weather disruptions on one side of the planet. The case for remote workers and workflows also gains significant steam, highlighting the increased need of many companies for better collaborative tools and solutions. And flexibility, over cost, will become an increasingly important part of a supplier's value proposition. Summarily, as much as COVID-19 negatively impacts the industry today, it should also accelerate IT modernization as a means of long-term risk mitigation.

"COVID-19 is a humanitarian crisis that will shape many markets and industries in 2020. The effect and duration of market drag will be determined by the trajectory of the outbreak from here on out as well as how Chinese supply chains adapt to major tech hubs running at suboptimal levels for at least the next three months," states Linn Huang, IDC research vice president of Devices and Displays.
