The current silicon-centric architecture deployed in datacenters, edge devices, and consumer handhelds has started to show its limitations in the era of hyperscale, multitenant, and shared-everything computing. Compromises to any part of this CPU subsystem with low-level, hardware-centric attacks pose a threat to applications and data that resides in the system. Processor-based and coprocessor-based approaches are two ways in which such vulnerabilities can be mitigated as and when they occur.
"OEM vendors and service providers will continue drive differentiation in their products and services by investing in processor- and coprocessor-based approaches that are unique to them. The more the investment, the more differentiated the service," said Deepak Mohan, research director, Cloud Infrastructure Services at IDC.
