Abstract

This IDC Perspective provides an overview and analysis of telecom and cable service provider network M&A deals and joint ventures (JVs) disclosed in 2019. The document is limited to M&A deals in which the acquirer took operational control of the target company and 50:50 JV deals.

According to Ragupathy Vellappa, associate research manager, IDC's Worldwide Telecommunications Research, "PE-backed investments coupled with the carrier divestiture strategy played a key role in telecom and cable service provider M&As in 2019. PE-backed deals accounted for more than half (57%) of total M&A deal value disclosed in 2019 as investment firms are keen to acquire network, datacenter, and fiber-based assets. Global carrier groups such as AT&T, Vodafone, and BT are increasingly focusing on key operational markets, fiber, and 5G-related investments as well as bolstering their balance sheet. Enhancing market scale along with convergence opportunities and digital disruption are the other solid factors driving M&As in the telecom services sector."
