On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Market Presentation breaks down U.S. households by pay TV and paid over-the-top (OTT) video subscription status. It shows the following for U.S. households at the end of 2019:

  • Share of U.S. households with a traditional cable, satellite, or telco TV service
  • Share of U.S. households with a subscription to at least one paid OTT video service
  • Share of U.S. OTT households that also subscribe to traditional pay TV
  • Share of U.S. traditional pay TV households that also subscribe to at least one paid OTT service
  • Share of U.S. households with a subscription to a virtual pay TV (vMVPD) service
  • Share of U.S. households that subscribe to a combination of all three types of services, including a 2015-2019 historical view.

"Cord-cutting of cable, satellite, and telco TV services continues, and traditional pay TV penetration dropped to only about 63% of U.S. households at the end of 2019. However, over 55% of U.S. households now subscribe to at least one paid OTT video service and nearly half of those do not have traditional pay TV. The TV and video subscription status of U.S. households is undergoing rapid change as OTT services grow and legacy services decline." — Greg Ireland, research director, TV and OTT Video
