Developer Autonomy and Influence Over the Selection of Developer Tools in the Enterprise

By: Arnal DayaratnaResearch Director, Software Development

Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective examines the topics of developer autonomy and influence with respect to the selection of developer tools.

"IDC has determined that more than 50% of developers claim to exercise either 'significant' or 'complete' autonomy or influence regarding the selection of development languages and IDEs," said Arnal Dayaratna, research director, Software Development at IDC. "This finding confirms that developers are key decision makers with respect to technology-related decisions in enterprises. Developers have the latitude to select developer tools for use on specific projects, and they also have the ability to influence purchasing decisions. Technology suppliers would do well to cultivate relationships with developers as a means of ensuring that their products and services are considered by developers for use on existing or future projects."
