On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Market Presentation summarizes key trends in Windows OS server deployments during the 2016–2018 period across cloud-based and traditional IT infrastructure environments and observes a significant shift toward cloud-based deployments. Operating systems play a pivotal role in enabling digital transformation (DX). IDC tracks operating system shipments and deployments across multiple deployment models and locations. This Market Presentation is first in the series of documents tracking deployment trends of operating systems in cloud-based environments.

"Windows operating system continues its dominance among OSS market share, with about 4.5% YoY growth in the year 2018," said Sriram Subramanian, research director, Infrastructure System, Platforms, and Technologies Group at IDC. "The share of Windows OS server deployments in cloud-based environments is expected to continue to grow at a faster rate than traditional IT environments as more enterprises are migrating their enterprise workloads to cloud-based deployments."
