IDC Market Glance: Service Mesh Ecosystem, 1H20
By: Sriram Subramanian Research Director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group, Jim Mercer Research Director, DevOps & DevSecOps, Brad Casemore Research Vice President, Datacenter Networks
Abstract
This IDC Market Glance provides an overview of the service mesh ecosystem from an infrastructure point of view. IDC expects this ecosystem to mature into a functional market in the next 18–30 months. IDC recommends technology buyers to invest in service mesh infrastructure when a significant portion of communication between business applications are deployed in heterogeneous production (such as multicloud infrastructures or deployment options). IDC recommends vendors to differentiate their offerings based on the support for ease of use and workload mobility across hybrid infrastructure platforms.
"Service mesh infrastructure platforms and services enable enterprises to connect, secure, and manage cloud-native applications and microservices-based applications. The service mesh ecosystem is in its early stages of technology maturity," said Sriram Subramanian, research director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies Group at IDC. "IDC expects this ecosystem to mature in the next 18–30 months, with more enterprises leveraging service mesh platforms and services for both legacy and cloud-native applications across heterogeneous infrastructure environments."
