Abstract

This IDC Perspective focuses on the path forward from hierarchical to empathetic leadership to enable the future of work.

The COVID-19 pandemic and associated economic and social disruptions have forced companies to accelerate their digital transformation. This in turn allows leaders to rethink the industrial-era decision and leadership processes they inherited — trading procedural compliance to meet shareholder needs for an active, digitally enabled, and empathic leadership, which enables teams to meet the needs of a broad array of stakeholders. Using this style of leadership at scale requires leaders to adopt new measurements, identifying key behaviors and their impacts on the enterprise as a whole.

"As leaders struggle with what it means to operate in a hybrid digital/physical world, we have the opportunity to lead in ways that are both courageous and empathetic," said Shannon Kalvar, research manager, IT Service Management and Client Virtualization program at IDC. "This empathetic leadership is bolstered and enabled at scale by new ways of detecting opportunities, collaborating, and measuring our impact on the business and the stakeholder community."
