Abstract

This IDC study presents our first five-year forecast for U.S. 5G smartphone shipments by generation, operating system, and air interface. The U.S. 5G smartphone market will reach a total of 35.2 million units shipped in 2020, up 2280% from the 1.5 million units shipped in 2019. From there, shipments will reach 146.5 million units in 2024, the final year of our forecast period, resulting in a CAGR of 150.7%.

"Growth of 5G handsets in the United States looks to be the one bright spot in the market, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19, lack of demand, and elongated refresh cycles," said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "The arrival of lower-cost 5G handsets expected to hit the market in 2H20 and 2021 will be one of the major catalysts for growth over the forecast period. Moreover, Apple joining the 5G race will undoubtedly bring a plethora of upgrade options to those users who are tied to the Apple ecosystem looking to jump on a faster 5G device down the road."
