MILAN, February 23, 2017 — IDC Energy Insights today announced the release of a new study, IDC MarketScape: IT and OT Integration Service Providers for EMEA Utilities 2017 Vendor Assessment (IDC #EMEA40142616, February 2017), which evaluates the capabilities and strategies of leading services vendors in enabling and supporting utility companies in their integration of IT and operational technologies (OT). The nine vendors evaluated in the study are Accenture, Atos, Capgemini, CGI, IBM, Infosys, OMNETRIC Group, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Wipro.
In utilities, OT have historically played a role in "keeping the lights on." Their scope was to protect assets and ensure commodity delivery to final customers. Those systems were kept separated from enterprise IT; even the teams responsible for OT and IT were segregated within the organization. Intelligent grid development and digital transformation are demonstrating that it is fundamental to bring together these siloed worlds. Improved asset management and efficiency are the main drivers for integration.
Collaboration with the ecosystem, including vendors with solid capabilities and expertise in IT and OT integration, is essential. This IDC MarketScape intends to provide utility companies with insight into the capabilities and strategies of service providers providing IT-OT integration services. In summary, IDC Energy Insights sees that:
"In utilities, operational technologies have historically played a role in 'keeping the lights on.' Their scope was to protect the assets (both plants and networks) and to secure the delivery of commodities to the final customers," said Jean Francois Segalotto, research manager, IDC Energy Insights EMEA. "OT was traditionally siloed from enterprise IT. But intelligent networks — and more broadly, digital transformation — are demonstrating that to improve asset management and efficiency or create new business models, it is fundamental to bring together the worlds of OT and IT."
